St.Michael’s right arm lifts overhead, gripping the hilt of a sword — the traditional weapon of the Princeps militiae coelestis, “Prince of the heavenly host,” leader of the angelic armies in the war described in Revelation 12.

His features are calm, almost detached from the violence beneath him — the traditional iconographic choice to show that Michael’s victory is not one of rage, but of ordained, righteous authority.

The Demon Underfoot
Pinned beneath Michael’s foot and knee, the demon twists downward, its horned head turned away, one clawed hand pressing weakly against the ground, a serpentine tail curling behind it.
This pose is the visual centerpiece of the entire relief — the moment of defeat itself, drawn from Revelation 12:7–9: “And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon… and the great dragon was cast out.”

Clouds & Rocky Ground
The background is carved with rolling, voluminous clouds surrounding Michael’s wings, while the base of the relief transitions into jagged, upward-thrusting rock formations.
