An altar is the sacred stone table at the heart of a church — the focus of the Eucharist and the sign of Christ’s sacrifice.
A marble altar is both a liturgical centre and a work of sculpture. Hand-carved from A-grade natural stone, it carries the altar slab (mensa), decorative reliefs — the Lamb, the Last Supper, vine motifs, the IHS monogram — and often a reredos behind it.
“Inside a church nothing approaches the importance of the altar. It symbolizes Christ himself.” — Romano Guardini, The Spirit of the Liturgy
“The altar is a table for the sacrifice, a repetition of the Last Supper. We are dealing with a sacred, sacrificial table — not an ordinary simple table.” — Augustinus Georgens, S.J.
Four main forms cover most churches. Each can be built to match your architecture, scale and liturgical tradition.
The principal altar, usually raised on a predella with a reredos. Suits cathedrals and larger parish churches with traditional or gothic interiors.
CathedralsParish Churches
A lower, freestanding mensa now favoured for face-the-people celebration. Frontals often carry the Last Supper relief. Ideal for modern churches and chapels.
Modern ChurchesChapels
Smaller altars along side aisles or in chapels, dedicated to Mary, St Joseph or a patron saint. Ornament can be simplified to suit a side chapel.
Side ChapelsShrines
Symbolic altars whose frontals carry the Lamb, cross or Passion reliefs — echoing the sacrifice of the Eucharist. Chosen for their theological focus in both Catholic and Protestant settings.
