Jesus has always been an eternal subject in art. Across centuries and cultures, artists have sought to portray His love, sacrifice, sorrow, glory, and peace through sculpture. In this blog, I would like to rank some of the most famous statues of Jesus from around the world, hoping to share the blessing and grace of Our Lord with you.

Top 1  Christ the Redeemer (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

Location: Corcovado Mountain, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Christ the Redeemer, with its arms spread wide, stands atop the 700-meter (2,300-foot) Corcovado Mountain, overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro. In 2007, it was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and has since become a global symbol of peace.

The statue was built of reinforced concrete and clad in thousands of triangular soapstone tiles, making it the largest Art Deco statue in the world. Construction began in 1926 and lasted for five years. It was funded almost entirely through donations from the Brazilian people, making it a powerful symbol of national unity. The soapstone tiles were even applied by hand by female volunteers, adding a special human touch to the monument.

Visitors who wish to stand directly before the statue must climb more than 200 steps to reach it. Interestingly, although it is 98 feet (30 meters) tall, it is still not the tallest statue of Jesus in the world.

Top2  Christ the King in Poland

Location: Świebodzin, Lubusz Province, Poland

According to BBC News, the world’s tallest statue of Jesus was built in Poland. Like the famous statue in Rio de Janeiro, Christ the King also stands with its arms outstretched. Unlike the Rio statue, however, it wears a golden crown rather than a crown of thorns, emphasizing Jesus’ identity as King.

The statue, known as Christ the King, is located in Świebodzin. It is said to be 33 meters (108 feet) tall—one meter for each year of Jesus’ life—according to Sylwester Zawadzki, the priest behind the project.

Some local officials, however, argue that the full height of the monument is actually 51 meters (167 feet) if the mound beneath it and the crown on its head are included.

Although some local residents consider the statue somewhat overly ornate, it still reflects the community’s deep faith, devotion, and reverence for Jesus.

Top3 Michelangelo’s Pieta

Location: St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City

I have mentioned this marble statue many times on my blog. Pietà is one of Michelangelo’s greatest masterpieces of the Renaissance and is now housed in St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. Michelangelo was only 22 or 23 years old when he received the commission from the French cardinal Jean Bilhères de Lagraulas, then the French ambassador in Rome. Remarkably, it is the only work Michelangelo ever signed.

In this sculpture, Mary tenderly cradles Jesus after His suffering, conveying a grief that is quiet yet profoundly moving. Michelangelo chose a block of Carrara marble from the Apuan Alps and gave it a luminous, polished surface, emphasizing the statue’s purity and beauty. Interestingly, the proportions of Mary and Christ are not anatomically balanced. If Mary were standing, she would appear much taller than Jesus. I believe this was Michelangelo’s deliberate artistic decision, through which he perfectly captured the mothering of Mary: No matter how great Jesus is, in Mary’s eyes, He is still her baby boy.

Top4 Christ the Redeemer of the Andes

Location: Uspallata Pass, at the border between Argentina and Chile

I rank Christ the Redeemer of the Andes fourth because of its remarkable symbolism of peace. In a world where regional conflicts still erupt from time to time, peace remains a deeply cherished hope for all people.

This bronze statue was erected in 1904 at Uspallata Pass, on the border between Argentina and Chile. It was commissioned by the Catholic Church and created by the sculptor Mateo Alonso.

The statue depicts Jesus standing upon a globe, with South America clearly emphasized. He raises one hand in blessing and holds a cross in the other, symbolizing the peaceful resolution of a border dispute.

Top5 Christ of the Abyss

Location: San Fruttuoso Bay, near Portofino, Liguria, Italy

This bronze statue of Jesus is one of the artworks I admire most. Christ of the Abyss, created by Guido Galletti, is a submerged bronze statue located in the Mediterranean Sea. The statue stands 17 meters beneath the water, with Jesus raising His hands beneath the sea. Its surface is covered with marine growth, which, to me, symbolizes the suffering He endured for humanity. Even so, He still looks upward toward the heavens beyond the surface of the water and continues to offer His blessing to us.

For me, this statue carries a powerful message: no matter how long you have suffered in the depths of life, or how lost and helpless you may feel, the love and blessing of Jesus are always with you. Whenever I go through difficult times, I think of this statue. It gives me strength and reminds me that I can find the courage to overcome hardship.

Top6 Veiled Christ Statue

Location: Cappella Sansevero, Naples, Italy

Veiled Christ was sculpted by Giuseppe Sanmartino, who was commissioned by Raimondo di Sangro, Prince of Sansevero. Di Sangro selected a block of white marble and intended the sculpture to be the centerpiece of the Cappella Sansevero in Naples, Italy.

When I traveled to Italy and saw it in person, I was absolutely astonished that such a masterpiece had been carved entirely by hand. Christ is shown lying on a stone bed beneath a transparent veil made of marble, and even the tiniest thorns woven among the branches are rendered in breathtaking detail.

Many people who have seen this statue feel that it is not merely a work of human hands, but something closer to a miracle—almost like art shaped by angels.

Top7 And Jesus Wept

Location: Near St. Joseph Old Cathedral, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA

And Jesus Wept is a monumental sculpture erected across the street from St. Joseph Old Cathedral in 1995 to commemorate the lives lost in the Oklahoma City bombing on April 19, 1995, at 9:02 a.m.

In the sculpture, Jesus covers His face with His hand, weeping in the presence of devastation and death. It recalls the shortest verse in the Bible: “Jesus wept.” He wept for the destruction of Jerusalem, for the death of His friend Lazarus, and, in this memorial, for the tragedy of the bombing and for all those who lost their lives in the attack.

We can also see 168 gaps in the wall, symbolizing the emptiness left behind by the 168 lives lost in the bombing.

Top8 Michelangelo’s Risen Christ

Location: Basilica di Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome, Italy

Also known as Christ the Redeemer or Christ Carrying the Cross, this marble statue was sculpted by Michelangelo between 1519 and 1520 and is housed in the Basilica di Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome, Italy.

Here, Christ is depicted with an idealized and graceful physique, leaning against the cross and turning His face away while holding the reed and sponge used to offer Him vinegar. This sophisticated pose reveals Michelangelo’s extraordinary skill in composition.

Top9  Cristo de la Concordia

Location: San Pedro Hill, Cochabamba, Bolivia

Rising high above Cochabamba, Bolivia, Cristo de la Concordia is one of the largest statues of Jesus in the world and stands as a symbol of peace. With His arms opened wide, Jesus seems to welcome all people into His warm and compassionate embrace.

Top10 The Heart of Jesus

Location: Gordon Hill, Harghita County, Romania

The Heart of Jesus is the largest statue of Jesus in Eastern Europe, erected on Gordon Hill in Harghita County, Romania, between Odorheiu Secuiesc and Praid, in 2011. The statue is made of stainless steel and iron, and its silver-colored form reflects the interaction between modern technology and a classical religious theme.

Final Thought

These ten statues of Jesus are memorable not only for their design, history, symbolism, and craftsmanship, but also for the deep spiritual meaning they carry. Around the world, there are many other statues of Christ that may not be internationally famous, yet they are still powerful expressions of faith and devotion.

For me, the true significance of these statues lies not in the stone, bronze, or marble itself. When we pray before a statue of Jesus, we are not worshiping the material object before us. Rather, we are honoring the image of Christ and reflecting on His presence in our world.

If you are looking for a custom statue of Jesus for prayer, worship, or church decoration, professional religious sculpture studios can help bring that vision to life with reverence and craftsmanship.
